When To Start Planting Spring Flowers

Annuals and perennials are different in their lifespan and temperament. Annuals grow and die in just one growing season. They come from seeds that are extremely sensitive to cold weather, which is why they do not last through the winter, and must be replanted each spring. However, they usually bloom continuously from spring through fall. In contrast, the perennial flower lives a minimum of three or more seasons, but bloom for only one to three weeks out of the year. Sometimes, it takes these flowers more than one season to bloom to their full maturity. They are very low maintenance in comparison to annuals, though some may need to be replaced every few years.

Since annuals are highly sensitive, be sure to plant them when the weather will not enter freezing temperatures. Most annuals do not tolerate frost and will do better if they are planted into soil that has had time to warm up after the winter. The best time to plant these is in the early summer. Perennials, on the other hand, are much heartier and can be planted quite early in the spring. They can make the adjustment to early spring weather, more so if they have been kept outdoors previous to planting, such as in an outdoor nursery. Perennials are so hearty that many can be planted in the fall and come back to life the following spring.
