Refinishing Your Deck

Before starting the refinishing process, clear your deck of any patio furniture, umbrellas, and benches. When your deck is clear, evaluate the condition and stability of the wood and stain, so you can clean according to the damage. If you choose to use a power washer, be careful, as it can harm to the wood if you are too vigorous. Wood strippers and brighteners are generally acceptable to add to the power washer to help prep the wood.

The next step, deck sanding, is labor-intensive and the most time-consuming, so you should employ the use of a power sander. Decks that are in good shape may only need light sanding before staining, while more worn desks will need more work. Sanding your deck evenly will ensure an even stain, so be sure to lend enough attention to the sanding process.

Once you have finished sanding, the last step is applying the deck stain. You can do this with a rolling brush or by spraying. When the refinishing process is complete, your deck should look great holding cast aluminum patio furniture and a stainless steel grill.
