How To Avoid Mosquitoes In Bird Baths

Take away the mosquitoes' home by changing the water in your bird bath at least once a week. Mosquitoes cannot reproduce unless they lay their eggs in calm, standing water. It takes at least one week for their eggs to hatch and turn into adult mosquitoes. If the water is changed or agitated within this period of time, the eggs will not hatch. Some experts suggest that simply changing the water frequently is enough to keep mosquitoes at bay.

If you would like to take your mosquito prevention to the next level, mosquito dunkers--small, donut-shaped, dissolvable larvicide products--can be used in your bird bath to kill off any mosquito larva before they hatch.  Also, make sure to get rid of other sources of standing water such as children's toys, flower pot saucers, and other items that can hold rain water.
